McLaughlin selected for Australia U14 Girls training camp
12 May 2009
Meg McLaughlin currently playing in the WVFC U18/PL womens team has been selected in the Australian Australian Under-14 Girls National Team training camp to be held at the Australian Institute of Sport later in May.We thought you might want to hear a little of Meg's football journey so far........
Meg has played her football with Woden since she was 4. After her first year at the club she thought she would retire from soccer and give dancing a go. As this was a disaster Meg decided her feet were better off in soccer boots than dancing shoes, so back to soccer she went.
Her then coach John Helgesan was thrilled to have her back in the all boys team at St. Peter and Paul's Garran. By the time she was 9 all the boys deserted her and went off to either Marist or St. Eddies so John sought out someone in the club who could help Meg continue to develop her football.
Ed Hollis, Peter White & Paul Leahy then coached Meg for 5 years and gave her wonderful opportunities such as playing in Kanga Cup for many years and then in 2008 taking the team to Denmark to play in the Dana Cup.
Meg's ambitions currently are to play in the U.S and gaining a scholarship while attending university. This, along with playing for the Matildas in the future are Meg's goals.
Meg has loved being part of Woden Valley, she is now in her 4th year of setting up the fields on a Saturday morning for the junior club and helping Gail Pfluger with the Pee Wees games at 9am.
Meg is in Year 9 at St. Clares College Griffith. The school has been very supportive of her soccer and has yet again allowed her to have time off to attend the training camp which will be held next week to finalize the team to travel to Vietnam.
We wish Meg...all the best with her football career!
